Concerts of Scott, Patton and Lollar Trio

Musical heavyweights and Atlanta, GA transplants, Kevin Scott, Marlon Patton, and Rick Lollar are coming to Groove for a night of serious funk, blues, and soul!

Kevin Scott — After 15 years on the Atlanta music scene, bassist Kevin Scott is expanding his musical and geographic reach. In the last year, he has toured and recorded with Jimmy Herring and John McLaughlin’s “Meeting of the Spirits,” Wayne Krantz, FORQ, Donny McCaslin, and Wednesday Night Titans. Kevin’s creative spirit and instinctual, groove-driven playing have made him a must-have on many exciting and unique projects. Although his itinerary has him traveling more than ever with no signs of slowing, he remains a musical pillar in Atlanta, where he has been a member of multiple bands including Ruby Velle & The Soulphonics and King Baby, and hosts the long-standing Monday night jam session at 529; an improvised, no-holds-barred weekly summit of musicians from all genres and backgrounds. There is much to look forward to in 2020 and beyond...world tours with FORQ, Wayne Krantz, Matador!, Wednesday Night Titans Donny McCaslin, and U.S. and international dates with Jimmy Herring, and the release of a Jimmy Herring/John McLaughlin live album recorded last fall in San Francisco.

Marlon Patton — Born and raised in Georgia, Marlon Patton is a New York-based drummer and music producer/engineer. Hailing from a long line of drummers dating back to his grandfather, Phil Patton who played in the Chicago big band circuit, Marlon keeps his schedule interesting and packed full of all types of music. He is the first call for so many musicians not just because of his impeccable time, but because of the incredible musicality of what he delivers. He plays within a huge dynamic range, making him the perfect match for quiet piano jazz performances to hard-hitting rock gigs. He can play with everything from precision to reckless abandon and make it truly his own. He currently is a member of Kenosha Kid, Weisshund, Nelson Patton, Lonnie Holley, The Trey Wright Trio, and The Mace Hibbard Quintet.

He has toured, performed, and/or recorded with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Jim White, Larkin Poe, Delta Moon, Gordi, Lera Lynn, Liv Warfield, Lonnie Holley, Houston Person, Jeff Coffin, Joel Frahm, Shahzad Ismaily, Col. Bruce Hampton, Takana Miyamoto, John Patitucci, Lew Soloff, Randy Brecker, Bobby Shew, Rufus Reid, Marcus Printup, Kevin Bales, Wycliffe Gordon, TOKU and Russel Gunn. He has recorded for labels such as Sony, Universal, Jagjaguwar, RH Music, Yep Roc, and Ropeadope plus many more independent releases. His drumming has been in soundtracks on Adult Swim, ABC, and HBO.

In the studio, Marlon has carved a name for himself by recording, mixing, and producing. Some recent projects he’s worked on are Lonnie Holley’s MITH, Liv Warfield’s Live at Cafe Wha, Jim White’s Where It Hits You, Leah Calvert’s Satellite, Daniel Clay’s 10,000 Things, Kenosha Kid’s Fahrenheit 451, ILL’s Gotten Gains, and Blair Dunlop/Larkin Poe’s Killing Time.

Rick Lollar — Rick Lollar is an Atlanta-based guitarist, singer, and songwriter who has united his disparate influences and abilities into a singular musical voice. He emerged at age 13 as a blazing blues guitar prodigy in the local scene of his native Tallahassee, Florida. But Lollar quickly began to seek a broader artistic conception and form his own identity, inspired not least by one of his first guitar heroes and role models: Jimmy Herring. Now as a member of Jimmy Herring and The 5 of 7, Lollar has achieved a dream and come full circle, going toe-to-toe with Herring in a spirit of genuine musical partnership.

Lollar’s guitar work, raw and blues-drenched yet stamped with the harmonic and rhythmic invention of jazz, is integral to The 5 of 7. But just as central is Lollar’s gritty, expressive singing voice and his gift as a songwriter and lyricist (The 5 of 7 is Herring’s first venture to feature songs with original lyrics). Before The 5 of 7, Lollar refined his guitar-and-vocal concept with the Rick Lollar Band (Soulful Hang, 2012) as well as his funky blues-rock outfit King Baby (The Big Galoot, 2017).
