About

Isle of Klezbos, formed in 1998 by drummer Eve Sicular, began as the “sister ensemble” of NYC-based Metropolitan Klezmer. The band approaches Yiddish musical traditions with loving irreverence and profound respect. This soulful, fun-loving powerhouse group has toured from Vienna to Vancouver since 1998. Performing neo-folkloric tunes, vintage 2nd Avenue swing, reimagined Eastern European tango classics, and a sound all their own, the bandmates collectively create arrangements. Original compositions by Isle of Klezbos reflect a wide variety of other genres in which individual bandmates have also been actively engaged, such as Latin jazz, reggae, and R&B. Among the band’s collaborative projects have been “J. Edgar Klezmer: Songs from My Grandmother’s FBI Files” (an Off-Off Broadway hit with music praised by the New York Times), Gregg Bordowitz’s series at MoMA/PS1, and original “Music from Yentl” by the late, great Jill Sobule. Isle of Klezbos broadcast credits include soundtrack music for “The L Word” on Showtime, featured on-camera appearances for HBO’s “And Just Like That, ” and concert footage from The Museum at Eldridge Street on “CBS Sunday Morning.” The group’s three full-length albums on Rhythm Media Records are “Yiddish Silver Screen” (2023), “Live from Brooklyn” (2014), and “Greetings from the Isle of Klezbos” (2003). Bandmates are alumnae of Eastman, Juillard, Berklee, and Manhattan Schools of Music as well as Harvard.
