About Ensemble:

BC bOp! was organized in late October of 1987 by a number of Boston College musicians whorecognized the need for a musical ensemble dedicated to performing high-quality instrumentaland vocal jazz. Sophomore David Healey led the effort with help from other interested BCmusicians. BC bOp! began rehearsing on November 8th, 1987. The band engaged the services ofSebastian Bonaiuto, a former music educator and graduate of the Boston College Carroll Schoolof Management, to direct the ensemble on a volunteer basis. After selecting an advisor, BC bOp!was recognized as an official university club on January 10, 1988, Sebastian Bonaiuto continuedas BC bOp!’s musical Director.

In July of 1989, Sebastian Bonaiuto was appointed Boston College Director of Bands. Soonthereafter, the members of BC bOp! voted to become an ensemble of the Boston College BandsProgram. The addition of BC bOp! to the Bands Program expanded the offerings to includeinstrumental and vocal jazz performance.

We, the members and directors of BC bOp!, acknowledge that our repertoire is primarily basedon jazz—a genre created by Black musicians that has roots in spirituals and work songs. We areaware not only of the privilege we have, but of the responsibility we carry in performing thisgenre on and off Boston College’s campus. We aspire to create a space in whichthought-provoking conversations are a part of our performances, a space in which individuals ofthe Boston College community may reflect on our institution’s place in Black history and its rolein shaping Black futures. Through our music, we seek to honor jazz’s origins, foster meaningfuldialogue, and uphold our commitment tocelebrating and respecting Black artistry and history.
