Then, you’ll practice identifying credible sources using a variety of methods, including KQED’s fun, interactive game, Share or Beware. You’ll leave with ideas, teaching tips, and ready-to-use resources to help students find reliable sources no matter where they click.

This edWebinar will be of interest to K-12 teachers, librarians, school and district leaders, education technology leaders, and instructional coaches. There will be time for questions at the end of the presentation.

About the Presenters

Angel Valerio is KQED’s Program Manager for STEM Education professional learning and a secondary science field supervisor for the University of San Francisco’s Urban Education and Social Justice Teacher Education Program. She leads professional development workshops for educators, with a focus on incorporating media literacy skills in science instruction, and is an instructor and course developer for KQED’s Media Academy for Educators. Angel has presented workshops on media production in science education at the California STEAM Symposium, CUE, and to various school districts in the Bay Area. She has also presented workshops about implementing interdisciplinary project-based learning and culturally relevant science pedagogy at the California Partnership Academies: Educating for Careers Conference and Free Minds, Free People Conference. Prior to her current roles, Angel worked with Green Dot Public Schools in South Los Angeles and in the Oakland Unified School District as a high school life science educator, teacher leader, and instructional coach. She is passionate about the intersection of science, social justice, and uplifting youth voice.

Rik Panganiban is the manager of online learning and educator certification at the San Francisco-based public media station KQED. He supports educators’ professional growth through KQED Teach, a free professional learning platform, and the PBS Media Literacy Educator Certification. Rik’s wide-ranging career has focused on media literacy, digital learning, youth development, and STEM education. Previously, Rik served as Senior Instructional Design Lead and Senior Manager of Digital Learning at the California Academy of Sciences.

Mary Kate Lonergan has taught eighth-grade students to critically engage with media and information in social studies settings for 12 years and has made media literacy the heartbeat of the social studies curriculum. Mary Kate believes that media literacy is a civic necessity. Media literacy empowers students to think critically, ask questions, reflect, create, and use their voices to take informed action. Mary Kate serves as a board member of the Central New York Council for Social Studies and works as an educational consultant with the News Literacy Project. She also serves as an educator collaborator with Ithaca College’s media literacy organization Project Look Sharp. She has presented workshops and sessions at the National Council for the Social Studies and National Association for Media Literacy Education conferences as well as at state and local social studies conferences. Mary Kate has also developed and implemented professional development courses for integrating media literacy skills and practices across different content areas. Mary Kate holds a master’s in the science of education from SUNY Cortland and is working towards a Graduate Certificate in Digital Literacy from the University of Rhode Island.
