Webinar “Shifting Reading Instruction in a Realistic and Manageable Way: The Gentle Shift”

Shifting practices to meet the research in reading can feel overwhelming, especially with the lack of funding, obstacles in implementation, and constant changes that teachers face daily. Educators and administrators need to find ways to make the change more manageable, even within their existing environments with only the available resources.

During this edWebinar, educators will receive a quick summary of the current movement in education towards structured literacy. They will then be introduced to practical approaches for shifting mindset and instruction, in areas such as reading groups/centers, planning methods, daily routines, and educational materials—all without needing to overspend or overwhelm.

The gentle shift is a mindset and a path for all educators who might be struggling with where to begin. Essentially, the transformation begins with educators, not with programs or packaged materials. These realistic approaches will give educators the tools to start shifting practices effectively and construct a strong foundation to achieve the desired results for their students.

This edWebinar will help TK-3 educators initiate a successful adoption of evidence-based reading practices. There will be time for questions at the end of the presentation.

About the Presenter

Elise Lovejoy is the founder and CEO of Express Readers, a TK-2nd-grade foundational skills and reading program. Express Readers’ mission is to provide the highest quality of resources and the fullest extent of teacher support, all with the outcome of higher literacy rates and more engaged readers—anchored in the belief that “every child deserves to learn to read.” Elise holds a BA and an MA in elementary education with 15+ years of experience in the classroom, grades K-2nd grade. During her teaching, Elise became frustrated at the lack of quality decodable books and resources created by educators who understood realistic applications in classrooms. She threw herself into research and studies to author a large collection of decodable books, design a full foundational skills curriculum, and form a teacher-run company, which now supports hundreds of schools across the U.S. and Canada.
