Webinar “The Science of Reading, Part 1: Myths, Truths, Tips, and Takeaways”

Join us for a series of three edWebinars on the Science of Reading and learn why this proven approach to teaching reading is getting the attention of state departments of education, districts, and reading experts across the globe.

During this first edWebinar, attendees will learn from our experts about what the Science of Reading truly is, the myths and facts surrounding how it is taught and who “needs” it, and ways to build the Science of Reading into classroom exercises, writing strategies, and activities. Special attention will be placed on how the Science of Reading can and should apply to English learners.

Attendees will learn:

  • Who benefits from instruction based on reading research
  • That instruction based on the Science of Reading extends far beyond foundational skills
  • What skills, strategies, and activities are essential to teaching all students and how to teach those skills for maximum learning
  • The adjustments to instruction that must be made when working with English learners

This edWebinar will be of interest to PreK-8 teachers, especially those teaching reading, literacy specialists, reading interventionists, and school and district leaders. There will be time for questions at the end of the presentation.

About the Presenters

Since founding Tools 4 Reading in 2010, Dr. Mary Dahlgren has focused on developing practical tools and training opportunities to bridge the gap between the Science of Reading and classroom practice. These tools include Kid Lips™ and the Kid Lips™ Instructional Guide, Sound Wall Solutions™, Phoneme/Grapheme Cards, and sound wall classes.

Dr. Dahlgren has over 25 years of experience in the field of education, having served as a dyslexia therapist, elementary classroom teacher, international literacy consultant, and author. Additionally, Dr. Dahlgren served as a national LETRS trainer for 18 years. Dr. Dahlgren’s longstanding interest in early childhood and elementary education has compelled her to spend much of her career working directly with classroom teachers to embrace the science behind reading.

As Chief Academic Advisor for Tools 4 Reading, Dr. Antonio Fierro is able to apply his many years in the classroom and as a literacy expert to helping schools and districts teach reading to every student, regardless of previous experience or native language. His vast experience contributes invaluable insight into Tools 4 Reading’s products and services.

Dr. Fierro is a former Texas State Teacher of the Year and was a member of the LETRS cohort of literacy consultants led by Dr. Louisa Moats for almost 20 years. Dr. Fierro has contributed to several literacy curricula for English learners along with Tools 4 Reading President, Dr. Mary Dahlgren. His areas of interest include early literacy instruction, improving the learning experience of pre-service teaching candidates, and the research and practice that impacts English learners.

Dr. Stephanie Stollar is the founder of Stephanie Stollar Consulting, LLC, and the creator of The Reading Science Academy. Dr. Stollar is the former vice president for professional learning at Acadience Learning Inc. She is a part-time assistant professor in the online Reading Science Program at Mount St. Joseph University, and a founding member of a national alliance for supporting reading science in higher education. Dr. Stollar has worked as an educational consultant, school psychologist, and assistant professor in the school psychology program at the University of South Florida. She has provided professional development for teachers for the past 25 years. She has conducted research in the areas of assessment, early intervention, and collaborative problem-solving. As a member of the board for the Innovations in Education Consortium, she collaboratively plans the annual MTSS Innovations in Education Conference.
