Webinar “Decoding Is Only Half the Story: Challenges with Implementing the Science of Reading”

To accelerate literacy learning, the Science of Reading is being embraced in states, districts, and schools across the nation. But as it turns out, actually implementing it in the classroom is no picnic. Part of this struggle is combatting the longstanding myth that the Science of Reading means phonics. While explicit phonics instruction is supported by the Science of Reading, it’s only one part of the equation.

Teaching students to read is complex. Some students seem to pick it up intuitively, while others struggle, and it can be difficult to identify why. The Science of Reading can help every student learn to read, but it is a large body of evidence that can be difficult to understand without proper guidance. It isn’t a one-stop approach to reading instruction, and without effective professional learning, implementation will continue to be a struggle.

Join Dr. Suzanne Carreker as she explores how educators can overcome these challenges to accelerate literacy learning for every student. In this edWebinar, Dr. Carreker will discuss:

  • The current state of literacy acceleration
  • The Science of Reading — it’s not just phonics
  • Why it is so hard to implement the Science of Reading
  • How to get teachers the knowledge they need

This edWebinar will be of interest to K-12 teachers and school and district leaders. There will be time for questions at the end of the presentation.
