Published: December 9, 2023; Author: Julia Sonrisa

 December 12, 2023    03:00 PM-04:00 PM EDT
Webinar “Science of Reading Misconceptions: Setting the Record Straight”

As the Science of Reading gains national recognition, several misconceptions about what it is and includes continue to circulate. This gold-standard body of research provides a basis for effective literacy instruction and continues to evolve as experts learn more about how we learn to read. Dispelling these myths and ensuring the Science of Reading is accessible to all educators will help all students achieve literacy.

Attend this edWebinar with Natalie Wexler, an acclaimed education writer and author of The Knowledge Gap, and Cassandra Wheeler, Director of LETRS State Success at Lexia, as they discuss common misunderstandings about the Science of Reading and provide research-backed responses to help everyone understand this valuable body of work—and what it means for student success in the classroom. Attendees will learn the truth behind the most prevalent Science of Reading myths and hear directly from Natalie about finding common ground on literacy and ensuring educators are equipped with the necessary skills to get kids reading.

This edWebinar will be of interest to PreK-12 teachers, school and district leaders, and education technology leaders. There will be time for questions at the end of the presentation.

Cassandra Wheeler is a proud “Poet” of the 1990 graduating class at Sidney Lanier High School of Montgomery Public Schools (MPS) in Alabama. In 1994, following undergraduate studies at the University of Alabama at Birmingham where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in early childhood education, Cassandra returned home to MPS and began her career as an educator at Morningview Elementary School. After earning her master’s degree and administrative certification, Cassandra joined the Alabama Reading Initiative, where she authored Alabama’s Reading First Initiative grant and managed Alabama’s statewide DIBELS pilot. In 2004, after serving the children of Alabama for ten years, Cassandra expanded her outreach to impact the life trajectories of students everywhere by joining the (then) Voyager Expanded Learning organization. Now, as the newly merged Lexia Learning, Cassandra serves the organization as the Director of LETRS State Success.
