Webinar “The Science of Reading: You Know More Than What Others Are Telling You”
The Science of Reading (SOR) is everywhere, and teachers are being told that they don’t know what it is. What is the SOR? You know more than you think. In this edWebinar, you will learn what the SOR is and what it is not. You will learn about a few key literacy concepts relevant to students across preschool to the secondary level so that you may begin reflecting on your current instructional practices. You will also learn where to locate useful resources to support your instruction.
This edWebinar will be of interest to PreK-12 teachers and school and district leaders. There will be time for questions at the end of the presentation.
About the Presenters
Dr. Heidi L. Hallman is a Professor of English Education, the English Education Program Coordinator, and Chairperson in the Department of Curriculum and Teaching at the University of Kansas. Her research interests include studying how prospective teachers are prepared to teach in diverse school contexts. Dr. Hallman’s published work includes Secondary English Teacher Education in the United States: Responding to a Changing Context (2018), winner of the Richard A. Meade award for exemplary research in English education. Other books, including Community Fieldwork in Teacher Education: Theory and Practice (Routledge, 2015); Millennial Teachers: Learning to Teach in Uncertain Times (Routledge, 2017); and Using Tension as a Resource: New Visions in Teaching the English Language Arts Methods Class (edited volume; Rowman & Littlefield, 2019), highlight innovation in English teachers’ practices. Dr. Hallman’s work has been published in English Education, Teaching Education, Teacher Education Quarterly, Equity & Excellence in Education, and more.
Dr. Barbara Bradley is a Professor of Reading Education, the Elementary Education Program Coordinator, and the Reading Specialist Program Coordinator in the Department of Curriculum & Teaching at the University of Kansas. Dr. Bradley’s scholarship focuses on early literacy, and she is currently a co-PI on Project PEACE, which is focused on the language and literacy development of emergent bilingual children. She has published in journals such as Early Childhood Research Quarterly, Journal of Early Childhood Literacy, Early Child Development and Care, The Reading Teacher, Young Children, and Science and Children. Dr. Bradley teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in literacy such as reading in elementary grades, reading comprehension, coordination and supervision of reading programs, and dyslexia. Finally, she was an early childhood special education teacher for 14 years and taught in diverse settings.
