Webinar “3 Best Practices for Designing Away-From-School Learning”
A summer school or after-school learning program can be structured to accomplish multiple goals: close gaps, prevent slides, give students fun and memorable experiences, and prepare students for the next year. Since the pandemic learning interruption, summer- and after-school learning programs have never been bigger or more important.
Often students who attend summer- or after-school programs have a range of academic and social needs from literacy and mathematics to social-emotional skills. Research shows that students benefit from attending extended school programs, especially those from low-income backgrounds. As campuses and districts consider their summer- and after-school learning options, it is important to make the best use of student time and support those adults who will be working with those students. In this edWebinar, we will look at three research-based practices to consider when designing these unique learning windows:
- Learn how to use short, complex texts to support literacy
- Engage students with collaborative and real-world learning experiences
- Build background knowledge and experiences

About the Presenter
Kim Carlton currently serves as a Senior Academic Officer for Teacher Created Materials. She works with teachers and districts all over the country to infuse reading and writing instruction into daily instruction. She has partnered with districts around the country to design summer learning programs and resources. She is a contributing author to Shell Education’s What the Science of Reading Says About Writing. Kim worked as a classroom teacher for over ten years. She later served as an instructional coach, a literacy coach, and a curriculum director. She has taught preservice teachers and summer writing institutes for educators.
