In this edLeader Panel, you’ll hear from a group of researchers and practitioners who have dubbed themselves the “Reading Peaceniks” after meeting for two years and searching for ways to end the divisiveness of the reading wars. The goal of the Peaceniks is to bring together a broad spectrum across disciplines within literacy education to realize that there is more in common than there are differences. There are meaningful ways to present essential direct instruction that provide children with oral language development and the alphabetic coding that research has shown they need to develop into joyful readers and writers.

With the recent paper Print-to-Speech and Speech-to-Print: Mapping Early Literacy, published by Reading Rockets, the panelists, who are authors and contributing editors of the paper, have chosen to address essential components of instructional approaches at their earliest roots—PreK to Grade 1 or 2. In this paper, they found consensus with 35 renowned literacy thought leaders and researchers after much discussion and editing. It suggests “good practices” for early literacy that they hope will address that yearning for meaningfulness on both sides. Attend this edLeader Panel to:

• Discuss the importance of including encoding and decoding that leads to reading and writing
• Learn about actions you can take to promote harmony while spearheading a literacy revolution

About the Presenters

Jan Hasbrouck, Ph.D. is a leading researcher, educational consultant, and author who works with schools in the U.S. and internationally. Dr. Hasbrouck worked as a reading specialist and coach for 15 years and later became a professor. Her research in reading fluency, academic assessment and interventions, and instructional coaching has been widely published. She is the author and co-author of several books, curriculum materials, and assessment tools. She continues to collaborate with researchers on projects related to reading assessment and intervention and enjoys volunteering at her grandson’s K-8 school in Seattle.

Margie B. Gillis, Ed.D., CALT is the founder and president of Literacy How, Inc., a non-profit organization that provides professional learning opportunities and coaching for educators on how best to implement evidence-based practices in the classroom. She has worked at the policy level through the Connecticut State Department of Education and is an advisor for ReadWorks, Understood, and the International Foundation for Effective Reading Instruction. She is on the editorial boards of IDA, Perspectives, and The Reading League Journal. Dr. Gillis believes that learning to read is a civil right and that all children can learn to read and benefit from evidence-based instruction.

Dr. Jeannine Herron received her Ph.D. from Tulane University Medical School and went on to Stanford Research Institute as a neurobiologist and neuropsychologist. In 1974, she was awarded a research fellowship from the National Institute of Health (NIH) to investigate cerebral organization in left-handers, right-handers, and ambidexters. This research culminated in the publication of her book, Neuropsychology of Left-Handedness, by Academic Press in 1980. From 1976 to 1984, she continued at Langley Porter as a research psychologist, contributing to all aspects of a large NIH-funded project studying the correlates of dyslexia.

Dr. Jan Wasowicz has 40+ years of experience as a language, literacy, and learning specialist, working with students who have language-based reading, writing, and spelling problems in a variety of educational settings. She is frequently invited to speak about best practices in literacy assessment and instruction and has taught numerous undergraduate and graduate courses. Dr. Wasowicz is the inventor of Earobics^®, author of SPELL-Links to Reading & Writing and the SPELL-Links assessment software (SPELL-2), and lead moderator of the SPELLTalk multi-disciplinary professional listserv. She is a certified and licensed speech-language pathologist and an ASHA Board Certified Specialist in Child Language, and holds a professional educator license with multiple endorsements from the State Teacher Certification Board of Illinois. Dr. Wasowicz is the founder, president, and CEO of Learning By Design, Inc., publisher of SPELL-Links and SPELL-2. She also maintains a small private practice in Illinois via telepractice and in Florida, serving students with oral and written language disorders.

About the Moderator

Listen. Learn. Teach. It’s that simple. Terrie Noland uses this philosophy as an innovator and a motivator, and it’s evident as she leads coaches, and mentors thousands of K-12 educators about the science of reading each year. She has a unique perspective on the need to unify all stakeholders around a vision for education to smash the reading divide for the millions of struggling readers. Her daily mission is to add value to educators to help influence transformational changes in school districts across the country by addressing the needs of marginalized students. Terrie seeks to share her expertise and passion to encourage and illuminate a path toward success and measurable outcomes.

If you looked at Terrie’s resume, you would be confused. Her undergraduate and graduate degree work placed her in the field of criminal justice. However, it was continuous listening and learning that led her on a journey in education starting out in preschool teaching and administration, then becoming a Certified Academic Language Practitioner (CALP) and earning a Ph.D. in literacy and educational leadership from St. John’s University. Terrie is also a John Maxwell certified speaker and coach.

As Vice President of Educator Initiatives at Learning Ally, Terrie works to ignite enthusiasm and excitement by building champion educators and administrators in creating cultures of literacy and learning.
