Fostering student agency is a critical step for student success in and out of the classroom, but what can teachers do, and what strategies can they employ, to pave the way for students to develop agency? What indicators influence teachers that may help or thwart designing classrooms to increase opportunities for students to develop agency, especially learners who have historically and systematically been excluded?

In this edWebinar, we will hear from the author of Understanding Your Instructional Power: Curriculum and Language Decisions to Support Each Student, who will explain her Power Principle, which will guide teachers as they “unpack how they understand and use the power associated with their authority and responsibility as an educator.”

We also will explore the Learner Variability Project’s Guide for Culturally Responsive Practice with the guide’s lead author. The purpose of the guide is to provide educators with questions and protocols to apply culturally responsive instructional practices as they address students’ learner variability in a holistic way—leading to student agency. Attend this session to:

• Understand the role teachers play in developing student agency, along with strategies to encourage student engagement
• Develop knowledge of a framework and set of strategies to engage students in developing their agency
• Explore the importance of a culturally responsive practice for developing student agency
• Take back to the classroom practical and easy-to-use strategies to develop a practice that develops and nurtures student agency

About the Presenters

Kelisa Wing is the 2017 DoDEA State Teacher of the Year and was the first person of color to achieve that honor in the school system’s 71-year history. She is the founder and CEO of Promises & Possibilities, LLC. Kelisa is a 2016 Association of Supervision, Curriculum, and Development (ASCD) Emerging Leader, and the 2017 University of Maryland University College (UMUC) Edward Parnell Outstanding Alumnus of the Year. She has served on the Education Civil Rights Alliance (ECRA) Steering Committee and is a member of the Leading Educator Ambassadors for Equity (LEAE) with the ECRA. As a member of the National Network of State Teachers of the Year (NNSTOY), Kelisa has led efforts for mentoring teacher leaders through a partnership with 100Kin10. She serves on the advisory board for the Learner Variability Project and Digital Promise. She is an author and content advisor of 18 children’s books about racial justice and has authored three books about the school-to-prison pipeline, justice, and other topics. She speaks both nationally and internationally about discipline reform, equity, student engagement, and many other topics.

Dr. Tanji Reed Marshall serves as the CEO and Principal Consultant of Liaison Educational Partners, an educational equity consulting organization collaborating to unpack and solve complex educational issues and inequities. She has more than 20 years in education, including classroom teaching experience, coaching/supporting teachers and leaders at a district level through many avenues, and supporting educational organizations. Most recently, Dr. Marshall served as the Director of P12 practice with the Education Trust in Washington, DC. Her experience in education has created space for her voice to be heard on issues across the nation as a sought-after keynote speaker and facilitator; panelist; national and international conference presenter; thought partner to districts, schools, and educational organizations; co-host of an education equity podcast; and author with published articles in magazines and journals, and book chapters.

About the Moderator

Barbara Pape, Senior Director for the Learner Variability Project at Digital Promise, led a three-year national survey on learner variability and teacher practice, wrote the paper defining learner variability, hosts a monthly webinar series, and co-developed The IEP Project. Previously, she worked in policy analysis and communications for nonprofits and in the U.S. Senate. Barbara has written for numerous publications and was editor of the first electronically delivered education newsletter, the Daily Report Card. Previously, she produced the Teaching & Learning conference for the National Board, worked in the communications office for the AFT during President Al Shanker’s tenure, and headed up government relations for the City Colleges of Chicago. She earned an Ed.M. at Harvard and coursework toward a Ph.D. at the University of Virginia. Barbara launched her career as a middle school teacher in her hometown of Pittsburgh.
