Webinar “Where the Science of Learning Meets the Science of Reading: Unpacking the Evidence”

While the Science of Reading tells us what is essential for building a reader, the Science of Learning tells us the conditions that are necessary for learning to thrive and last. During this edWebinar, Dr. Marisa Ramirez Stukey and Dr. Lenora Forsythe will explore the elements of the Science of Learning and connect the Science of Learning to the Science of Reading.

Attendees will engage in learning about the evidence base for the Science of Learning and connect those principles to the components of the Reading Rope. Professional readings and discussions will ground the session as well as lesson and video analysis to connect the research to practice. Attend this session to consider the implications for your own practice and to learn more about how combining the Science of Learning with the Science of Reading has the potential to meet the needs of the whole child and support the development of independent learners.

By the end of this edWebinar, attendees will be able to:

  • Define the key components of the Science of Learning and the skills/sub-skills of the Science of Reading
  • Identify parallels between the Science of Reading and the Science of Learning
  • Refine instructional priorities grounded in the Science of Reading and the Science of Learning

This edWebinar will be of interest to K-12 teachers, reading coaches, curriculum directors, and school and district leaders. There will be time for questions at the end of the presentation.

About the Presenter

Dr. Marisa Ramirez Stukey is the senior director of research and engagement for Collaborative Classroom. Dr. Ramirez Stukey received her Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction with an emphasis on teacher education and professional learning and a master’s degree in reading education from the University of Florida. She is a National Board Certified Teacher with over 15 years of experience teaching in both elementary and higher education contexts, instructional coaching, and professional learning systems development.

Her research interests focus on reading comprehension instruction and designing literacy professional learning. She has consulted with numerous school districts in developing change models and collaborative professional learning structures, particularly to shift literacy instruction. Dr. Ramirez Stukey is the co-author of the book Professional Learning Redefined: An Evidence-Based Guide published by Corwin Press. She lives in Gainesville, Florida with her husband and daughter.

Dr. Lenora Forsythe is the senior manager of educational proposals and pursuits at Collaborative Classroom. She earned her Ed.D. in curriculum and instruction with a concentration in reading from the University of Central Florida. Her research emphasized professional learning for elementary school literacy coaches. She earned her master’s degree in reading education from Nova Southeastern University, and her bachelor’s degree in early childhood education from the University of Central Florida. Dr. Forsythe has ten years of teaching experience at the elementary school level which includes literacy coaching as well as teaching the first and third grades. Additionally, Dr. Forsythe spent five years teaching undergraduate elementary education courses that focus on literacy at UCF.

Andreia Simon is Regional Director for territories in the Mountain West and Western U.S. for Collaborative Classroom. Over her 19 years in education, she has been fortunate to serve as a classroom teacher, reading specialist, literacy leader, and instructional coach. Before joining Collaborative Classroom, she served as Senior Literacy Consultant and READ Act Field Support Manager at the Colorado Department of Education. In this role, she led professional learning for educators in the Science of Reading and supported district leadership in the implementation of the Colorado READ Act, seminal legislation designed to ensure that all students in Colorado receive equitable access to scientific and evidence-based reading instruction. Andreia now resides in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
