Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) has a flourishing world language program in which 221 students earned the Seal of Biliteracy last school year. Prince George’s County offers 11 languages, including five Less Commonly Taught Languages (LCTLs). How has Prince George’s County accomplished this success? Join world language department chairs from a PGCPS high school and middle school to learn their secret sauce to building a top-notch world language program.

• Understand how to increase the number of students earning the Seal of Biliteracy
• Discuss how to ensure your district has a Seal of Biliteracy success for EL students as well as native English speakers
• Find out how to overcome challenges encountered in world language classrooms

This edWebinar will be of interest to world language directors, department heads, and teachers as well as school and district leaders of grades 3-12. There will be time for questions at the end of the presentation.

About the Presenters

Carrie Robertson has been a Spanish teacher in Prince George’s County Public Schools for 29 years. During this time, she has taught Spanish 1 to 4, IB Spanish, linguistics, seminar, and the foundations of interpretation and translation. She currently serves as the world languages department chair at Parkdale High School in Riverdale, MD and the world languages assistant to secondary schools and programs in Prince George’s County Public Schools. She provides support and oversees the Seal of Biliteracy program and the implementation of various platforms such as Mango and Guadalingo. Carrie also has written curriculum guides and assessments for various courses in the world language program.

Vivian Rivera DeLeón is originally from Puerto Rico where she taught fourth- to sixth-grade social studies and Spanish. Vivian has been a Spanish teacher at Prince George’s County Public Schools for 14 years. During this time, she has taught elementary grades, introduction to Spanish, and Spanish 1 and 2. Currently, Vivian serves as the world languages department chair at John Hanson Montessori School in Oxon Hill, MD. Vivian also has written curriculum guides for the Spanish 1 text adoption program and end-of-the-year assessment for Spanish 3. Vivian completed her M.Ed. in curriculum and instruction at Walden University. Also, she just finished her doctorate courses in higher education self-designed at Walden. Vivian is an accredited International Educational Speaker by the Cámara Internacional de Conferencistas from Lima, Perú.

About the Moderator

Melanie Fox joined Mango Languages in 2020 and brought over 20 years of experience to the Mango Team. Described as an innovative, results-oriented management professional and language educator, she also holds expertise in language, eLearning, education technology, and professional service industries. Melanie is a hands-on coach for companies providing products and services in K-12, higher education, and corporate spheres. Melanie also serves as a multilingual subject matter expert for English and world language learning and assessment. Melanie holds a B.S. in linguistics and Spanish from Georgetown University and an M.S. in linguistics (computational) from Georgetown University.
