Webinar “The Science of Reading, Part 3: What In-Service Teachers Need to Know”

Webinar “The Science of Reading, Part 3: What In-Service Teachers Need to Know”

Many reading educators have focused on and mastered teaching the five components of reading, first published in the National Reading Panel Report in 2000. These skills include phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and text comprehension. Although proficiency in these skills is essential, this edWebinar will emphasize the need for teachers to possess a deeper understanding of language structures that include phonology, orthography, syntax (the structure of sentences), morphemes, semantics (word and phrase meaning), and the organization of spoken and written discourse. This session will place an additional emphasis on morphological awareness and its contribution to a student’s literacy development.

Attendees will learn:

  • How to build word curiosity and a love for words by zeroing in on the components of our language and why these components are essential for the English learner
  • What instruction looks like in the early grades
  • What is important to focus on in the intermediate grades
  • Why morphological awareness is important and how to integrate it into daily routines

This edWebinar will be of interest to PreK-8 teachers, literacy specialists, reading teachers, reading interventionists, and school and district leaders. There will be time for questions at the end of the presentation.

About the Presenters

Since founding Tools 4 Reading in 2010, Dr. Mary Dahlgren has focused on developing practical tools and training opportunities to bridge the gap between the Science of Reading and classroom practice. These tools include Kid Lips™ and the Kid Lips™ Instructional Guide, Sound Wall Solutions™, Phoneme/Grapheme Cards, and sound wall classes.

Dr. Dahlgren has over 25 years of experience in the field of education, having served as a dyslexia therapist, elementary classroom teacher, international literacy consultant, and author. Additionally, Dr. Dahlgren served as a national LETRS trainer for 18 years. Dr. Dahlgren’s longstanding interest in early childhood and elementary education has compelled her to spend much of her career working directly with classroom teachers to embrace the science behind reading.

As Chief Academic Advisor for Tools 4 Reading, Dr. Antonio Fierro is able to apply his many years in the classroom and as a literacy expert to helping schools and districts teach reading to every student, regardless of previous experience or native language. His vast experience contributes invaluable insight into Tools 4 Reading’s products and services.

Dr. Fierro is a former Texas State Teacher of the Year and was a member of the LETRS cohort of literacy consultants led by Dr. Louisa Moats for almost 20 years. Dr. Fierro has contributed to several literacy curricula for English learners along with Tools 4 Reading President, Dr. Mary Dahlgren. His areas of interest include early literacy instruction, improving the learning experience of pre-service teaching candidates, and the research and practice that impacts English learners.

Dr. Deb Glaser has a passion for getting it right when it comes to reading instruction, and even more so, compassion for teachers who choose to teach in order to improve lives. Even more deeply, Dr. Glaser has compassion for students who struggle with learning to read. Dr. Glaser has dedicated her career to separating the facts from fiction when it comes to how students learn to read, and what it takes to teach students to read.

She received her doctorate in curriculum and instruction with a specific focus on reading and school reform from Boise State University. She is an educational consultant, author, and professional development provider with expertise in reading assessment and proven instructional methods. She was a classroom and learning disability instructor and director of a non-profit dyslexia learning center where she developed programs to teach teachers and students. Dr. Glaser is beloved and well-known by educators everywhere as the person who helped them understand how to teach every child to read. Through deepening knowledge and making explicit how to bridge that knowledge to instructional practice, Dr. Glaser has led the way for teachers who strive to be the best reading teachers they can be.

She was an original National LETRS Trainer, a policy advisor to the National Council on Teacher Quality, and regularly contributes to the evaluation of university programs that prepare our teachers to teach reading. Dr. Glaser is the author and co-author of five books. Her most recent contributions to the field are Morpheme Magic: Lessons to Build Morphological Awareness, and the online reading course, The Reading Teacher’s Top Ten Tools: Instruction That Makes a Difference (now in the Tools 4 Reading family).
