Webinar “Screening Bilingual Language Development for English—Spanish-Speaking Preschoolers”

In this edWebinar, language experts Aquiles Iglesias, Ph.D., Jill de Villiers, Ph.D., and Roberta Michnick Golinkoff, Ph.D. will highlight the importance of monitoring the language skills of English—Spanish bilingual preschoolers and providing needed support early. They’ll share best practices for screening bilingual preschoolers, including what to measure, when to screen, and how to screen. An introduction to the new web-based screening tool, the Quick Interactive Language Screener: English—Spanish (QUILS: ES) will be provided.

This edWebinar will be of interest to early childhood educators, speech-language pathologists, and school and district leaders. There will be time for questions at the end of the presentation.

About the Presenters

Aquiles Iglesias, Ph.D. is the Unidel Katherine Esterly Chair Emeritus of Health Sciences and the founding director of the Speech-Language Pathology program at the University of Delaware. Dr. Iglesias’ work focuses on language development and assessment of bilingual (Spanish—English) children. He is the author of the Bilingual English—Spanish Assessment (BESA), Systematic Analysis of Language Transcripts (SALT), the Quick Interactive Language Screener (QUILS), and the Quick Interactive Language Screener: English—Spanish (QUILS: ES).

Jill de Villiers, Ph.D. is the Sophia and Austin Smith Professor in the Departments of Psychology and Philosophy at Smith College. She has four books about language acquisition and numerous chapters and journal articles on the acquisition of complex syntax and other language phenomena in preschoolers. In addition, she has published widely on the interface between language and theory of mind. She has co-published two other assessments besides the QUILS and QUILS: ES—the DELV (Diagnostic Evaluation of Language Variation), a test for African American and other dialect-speaking children in the U.S. now published by Ventris Learning Company, and the DREAM (Diagnostic Receptive and Expressive Assessment of Mandarin) in China. She collaborates with colleagues throughout the world on linguistic research and assessment and has been heavily involved also in the design of language intervention materials.

Roberta Michnick Golinkoff, Ph.D. is the Unidel H. Rodney Sharp Professor in the School of Education (and Psychological and Brain Sciences and Linguistics and Cognitive Science) at the University of Delaware. Author of more than 200 articles and 16 books (some for lay audiences), her work is focused on language development, playful learning, media for children, and early spatial knowledge. Her latest book, Becoming Brilliant: What Science Tells Us About Raising Successful Children, reached The New York Times Best Seller list. She has won numerous awards for her research and is passionate about bringing out developmental science for use by families and schools. Routinely interviewed by radio, television, and print media, she speaks regularly to academic, policy, and lay groups, spreading the field’s scientific findings.
