Today, in any school system, data privacy is a priority that touches every aspect of school operations. In this edLeader Panel, three superintendents share the successful strategies they lead to assess their school districts’ privacy and compliance policies and the practices they implement as they relate to their districts’ systemwide use of technology.

Attendees will hear how each superintendent addresses several specific critical guidelines for leading school system data privacy initiatives, including staying current with state and federal laws, keeping instructional impacts in the picture, and effective training strategies for staff and students.

All three superintendents represent school districts that have earned the Trusted Learning Environment (TLE) Seal, the nation’s only privacy framework designed specifically for school systems. When any school district goes through the process of earning the TLE Seal they develop strong data privacy programs and are able to build a culture of trust with all the communities they serve. Attendees will learn how their own school districts can earn the TLE Seal.

This edLeader Panel is of particular value to superintendents, K-12 school and district leaders, and aspiring school leaders. Attendees will have the opportunity to submit questions to the panelists during the live broadcast.

About the Presenters

Casey Bertram began his education career as a teacher and principal in Kalispell, Montana. While working there, Hedges Elementary School in Kalispell was awarded the 2010 National Title One Distinguished Schools Award for sustained excellence in academic achievement. Mr. Bertram then served for seven years as the principal of Hawthorne Elementary in Bozeman. In 2018, Hawthorne Elementary was recognized as a Solution Tree Model PLC School.

During the 2020-2021 school year, Mr. Bertram served as both Bozeman Public Schools’ Deputy Superintendent of Curriculum and Technology as well as Interim Co-Superintendent. Mr. Bertram was recently hired as the permanent superintendent of Bozeman Public Schools. He is very proud of the work being done in the Bozeman district to help close identified achievement gaps through early literacy, Science of Reading implementation, and the systematic use of MTSS and professional learning communities (PLC) models. Mr. Bertram lives and plays in Bozeman with his wife, Lacey, and four children.

Dr. Alex Marrero leads with a vision of supporting students the way educators have supported him. As the child of a Cuban refugee and an immigrant from the Dominican Republic, he prides himself on representing many of the Latinx students in the communities he has served as both a school and district leader. Dr. Marrero has been honored as an outstanding administrator by the Latino Caucus of the Council of School Supervisors and Administrators and inducted into the New York Academy of Public Education. He received a Leadership and Excellence in Education Award from the Association of Dominican-American Supervisors and Administrators and was recognized as the National Latino Administrator of the Year by the Association for Latino Administrators and Superintendents. His life exemplifies a bit of wisdom he borrows from Nelson Mandela: “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” Dr. Marrero is proud to serve as the superintendent of the Denver Public Schools.

Dr. Penelope Martin-Knox is a career educator with 29 years of experience in education. She has dedicated her efforts to ensuring positive academic outcomes for all children. Dr. Martin-Knox came to Raytown from Sumter School District where she served 15,000 children as Superintendent. Prior to that, Dr. Martin-Knox served in several positions with Baltimore County Public Schools in Baltimore, Maryland. Her positions included the chief of school climate and safety, the community superintendent for elementary, middle, and high schools, and the assistant superintendent of middle schools. During her career in education, she has proudly served in the classroom as a high school music and reading teacher, a middle school instrumental music teacher, a performing arts department chairperson, and a middle school assistant principal and principal. Dr. Martin-Knox is extremely excited and proud to be a part of the Raytown community and to continue serving children as Superintendent of Raytown Quality Schools.

About the Host

Ann McMullan is Project Director for CoSN’s EmpowerED Superintendents Initiative. Ann served as Executive Director for Educational Technology in Klein ISD near Houston, Texas until September 2013, when she and her family moved to Los Angeles, California. For 16 years Ann led the district team that provided professional development on technology and 21st-century instructional strategies to 4,000 educators serving 50,000 students. She was co-chair of the Texas Education Technology Advisory Committee which developed the Texas Long Range Plan for Technology.

Today, Ann works as a public speaker, writer, and consultant focused on leadership to meet the needs of today’s students. Ann serves on the edWeb.net Advisory Board, ClassLink’s Senior Advisors Group, and is a founding member of ERDI’s EdLeader Alliance. She also volunteers as a leadership consultant with Executive Service Corps of Southern California, serving non-profit associations.
