Online Drawing Soirée: Come Back to Drawing — For Good This Time
For the person who has never stopped wondering if they could. Free. Monthly. Come draw with us.
Somewhere around age ten, most of us got the message that drawing wasn’t for us. A careless comment, a comparison to someone else, a grade that stung. And we set it down. Maybe you’ve tried to pick it back up since — a YouTube tutorial, a sketchbook you barely used, a class that didn’t quite stick. Or maybe you’ve just been quietly wondering if you still could.
This is the event for that person.
What is the Online Drawing Soirée?
It’s a free, interactive workshop I host every month for adults who want to come back to drawing — or discover it for the first time. It’s not a lecture. You will actually draw. You will talk to other people in small breakout rooms. And you will almost certainly discover that you are not alone in how you feel about this.
In 90 minutes together, we will:
- Talk honestly about why most of us stopped drawing — and why that story isn’t true
- Learn gesture drawing, a technique used by professional artists that quiets the perfectionist in your brain and lets you actually see what’s in front of you
- Draw together using the same images I use with my students, with time to try each one yourself
- Meet other people in breakout rooms who are exactly where you are
People consistently tell me that the breakout rooms are where something shifts. There’s something about saying out loud, “I haven’t drawn since fourth grade,” and having three other people say, “me too,” that changes things.
What do I need to bring?
Any paper. Any pencil. An open mind. That’s genuinely it. Beginners are not just welcome — they’re who this is designed for.
Who teaches this?
I’m Sharon McNeil. I’ve been teaching drawing for over 20 years — at Chemeketa Community College, Savannah College of Art and Design, and now through my own school, New Page Academy. I don’t teach because I think everyone needs to become an artist. I teach because I’ve watched drawing give people something they didn’t know they were missing — a sense of quiet, a sense of purpose, a version of themselves that exists outside of every other role they play.
I do this every month because I never want someone to miss out on that.
A few practical things:
- Keep your camera on if you can — it makes the breakout rooms so much richer
- You’ll receive three reminder emails with your Zoom link before the event
- If the timing doesn’t work this month, I run three versions and alternate beteen 2 different times — you’re always welcome back
