Theatre Devising 101

On Monday, March 13, 2024, Spaces@520, a subsidized office and rehearsal space for theatre companies in New York City, will host a workshop on Theatre Devising 101, led by Underground Skills Exchange, a collective of theatre artists who share their skills and knowledge with the community. The workshop is open to anyone who wants to learn how to create original theatre using games, exercises, and collaboration. The workshop will take place at Spaces@520, located at 520 8th Avenue, and will be free and open to the public.

Theatre Devising 101 is a workshop that introduces participants to the basics of devising, a process of creating theatre from scratch, without a script or a director. Devising emphasizes ensemble work, consensus, theme development, and creativity. The workshop will use theatre games to warm up, generate ideas, and explore different ways of telling stories. The workshop will also guide participants through the stages of devising, from brainstorming to presenting. By the end of the workshop, participants will have created a short piece of theatre that reflects their interests and perspectives.

The workshop will be facilitated by Zeynep Akça and Caitlin Wees, two theatre artists who are part of Underground Skills Exchange, a collective that organizes workshops, events, and projects that foster skill-sharing and community-building among theatre makers. Akça and Wees have extensive experience in devising and teaching theatre and have worked with various groups and organizations, such as The Civilians, The Foundry Theatre, and The Public Theater.

The workshop will be an enjoyable and educational event that will appeal to anyone interested in theatre, whether as a beginner or a professional. The workshop will also be a great opportunity to meet new people, have fun, and express oneself through theatre. The workshop will start at 7:00 pm and last for about two hours. No prior experience or registration is required, but participants are advised to wear comfortable clothes and shoes.
