Reel to Read Movies “The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean” (1972)

“The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean” is a whimsical and irreverent Western comedy starring Paul Newman as the titular Judge Roy Bean, a self-proclaimed “law west of the Pecos” who rules over a ramshackle saloon in the desolate Texas town of Langtry.

Bean is a colorful and eccentric character, a self-styled judge with a penchant for the finer things in life, despite his rough-and-tumble surroundings. He dreams of transforming his dusty town into a glamorous haven, obsessed with the glamorous actress Lily Langtry, whom he names his town after.

The film follows Bean’s misadventures as he presides over his makeshift court, dispensing justice with a mix of absurdity and pragmatism. He faces off against a series of eccentric characters, including a ruthless cattle baron, a mysterious gambler, and a beautiful saloon singer.

Despite his comical antics and self-important pronouncements, Bean’s heart lies in protecting the downtrodden and seeking justice for the helpless. His attempts to impose order and civility in his chaotic town often backfire, leading to hilarious situations and unexpected twists.

“The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean” is a celebration of the Wild West, its larger-than-life characters, and the clash of cultures. It’s a film that balances humor with heart, offering a unique and often absurd perspective on the American frontier.
