Presentation Description:

This program is meant to both situate pediatric and adolescent gender dysphoria within cultural and medical contexts. In the first half of the program, the presentation aims to discuss the definition, nomenclature, and very brief history of gender dysphoria, as well as basic aspects of medical management. This will include induction of testosterone- and estrogen-medicated puberty and pubertal blockade. The second half of the program is less didactic and meant to situate gender dysphoria within current cultural and media-related contexts, with a focus on how individual positionality impacts perceptions of medically necessary care.

Learning Objectives: Participants will be able to:

  1. Recall the definition and diagnostic criteria for both gender dysphoria in adolescents and adults and gender dysphoria in children
  2. Identify at least two reversible medical interventions for adolescents and young adults who experience gender dysphoria
  3. Apply at least two current, evidence-based professional guidelines for the management of gender dysphoria in adolescents and young adults
  4. Explain the impact of positionality on care
  5. Discover how various lived experiences may impact perspectives on gender and sexuality
