Set in the 19th century, the film follows the lives of two sisters, Marguerite and Marianne Patourel, who both fall in love with the same man, William Ozanne. After William mistakenly proposes to the wrong sister in a drunken letter and then flees to New Zealand, Marianne selflessly follows him, facing hardships and a Maori uprising, while Marguerite remains behind, devoting herself to spiritual life.
