Directed by Jacques Demy, “Donkey Skin” is a whimsical French musical fantasy based on Charles Perrault’s fairy tale. The story follows a grieving king who, after the death of his wife, vows to marry only a woman as beautiful as her, unwittingly setting his sights on his daughter, the princess. To escape this fate, the princess, with the help of her fairy godmother, disguises herself as a magical donkey and flees the kingdom. Working as a scullion in a distant land, she eventually captures the heart of a charming prince, leading to a series of enchanting and surreal events that culminate in love, revelation, and a happily-ever-after.
