Set in 1964 South Carolina, “The Secret Life of Bees” follows 14-year-old Lily Owens (Dakota Fanning), a white girl haunted by the accidental death of her mother. Fleeing her abusive father (Paul Bettany) and accompanied by her caregiver, Rosaleen (Jennifer Hudson), Lily finds refuge with the Boatwright sisters—August (Queen Latifah), June (Alicia Keys), and May (Sophie Okonedo)—three Black beekeeping sisters who introduce her to love, healing, and the power of female community. As racial tensions rise in the segregated South, Lily uncovers painful truths about her past while discovering strength, forgiveness, and a newfound sense of belonging.
