Thursday Night Movies “You’ll Never Get Rich” (1941)
“You’ll Never Get Rich” is a musical comedy that follows the misadventures of Robert Curtis, a talented Broadway dancer who is accidentally drafted into the army. A case of mistaken identity, involving the real draftee’s missing dog tag, lands him in basic training, much to his dismay. While he’s trying to navigate the army’s rigid structure and avoid duty, he also tries to woo his sweetheart, Sheila Winthrop, a talented showgirl who is part of the army’s camp show. His attempts to juggle his army responsibilities, his romantic pursuits, and his attempts to get out of the army lead to a series of comedic misunderstandings, mistaken identities, and elaborate schemes. The film showcases the talents of Fred Astaire’s dancing and Rita Hayworth’s singing and dancing, combining song-and-dance numbers with lighthearted humor and romantic entanglements, all set against the backdrop of army life.
