Reel to Read Movies “Destry Rides Again” (1939)

“Destry Rides Again” is a classic Western comedy that follows the adventures of Tom Destry, a gun-shy but skilled lawman, who arrives in the lawless town of “The Last Chance” to clean up its corrupt sheriff and his gang.

The town is run by the tyrannical and ruthless Kent, who rules with an iron fist, supported by his henchmen and the fear he instills in the townsfolk. Destry, appointed by the governor to bring order, initially refuses to resort to violence, much to the frustration of the town’s saloon singer, Frenchy, who wants Kent and his men taken down.

Destry’s pacifist approach is met with skepticism and ridicule by the townsfolk and even by his deputy, who urges him to act with force. However, Destry remains steadfast in his belief that justice can be achieved without resorting to gunfights.

As the situation escalates, Destry’s patience is tested. Kent’s criminal activities and his mistreatment of the townspeople escalate, forcing Destry to finally take action. He employs a clever strategy, outsmarting Kent and his gang with his wit and skills, eventually bringing the town’s outlaws to justice without resorting to a violent showdown.

“Destry Rides Again” is a classic Western with witty dialogue, hilarious slapstick humor, and a charming performance by Marlene Dietrich as Frenchy. It’s a story that celebrates justice, bravery, and the power of wit over violence.
