Children’s 16mm Film Screening “Mulan” (1998)

“Mulan” is a Disney animated musical that reimagines the classic Chinese legend of Hua Mulan, a young woman who disguises herself as a man to take her ailing father’s place in the Imperial Army.

The film begins in ancient China, where Mulan is a spirited and unconventional young woman who struggles to conform to traditional expectations of femininity. When the Huns invade, Mulan’s father, a veteran soldier, is called upon to serve, but his frail health makes him unfit for battle.

Determined to protect her father, Mulan secretly takes his place, disguising herself as a man named “Ping.” She joins the army and faces a multitude of challenges, including learning to fight, proving her worth to her fellow soldiers, and overcoming the prejudice against women in the military.

Through her courage, intelligence, and strong sense of duty, Mulan excels in training and battle. She earns the respect of her comrades, including her captain, Li Shang, a skilled and honorable warrior.

When the Huns attack, Mulan’s quick thinking and ingenuity save the army and ultimately lead to their victory. In the end, Mulan’s true identity is revealed, but she is praised for her bravery and valor, and her actions pave the way for women in the army.

“Mulan” is a story of self-discovery, courage, and breaking societal norms. It celebrates the importance of embracing individuality and fighting for what you believe in, regardless of gender expectations. The film is known for its beautiful animation, memorable songs, and powerful message of female empowerment.
