In his second feature film, Pedro Costa, a Portuguese filmmaker known for his works such as “Horse Money” and “In Vanda’s Room,” has created a brilliant adaptation of Jacques Tourneur’s classic film “I Walked with a Zombie.” This film serves as a reflection on Portugal’s colonial legacy.
The story revolves around Mariana, a nurse played by Inês de Medeiros, who accompanies Leão, portrayed by Isaach de Bankolé, back to his home on the volcanic Cape Verde islands after an accident leaves him in a coma. However, when they arrive, Leão is not recognized by the locals, leaving Mariana trapped with a mysterious community that eventually captivates her.
“Casa de Lava” has never been released in the U.S., but it has been beautifully restored. Although it is an early work, it already showcases the masterful films that Costa would later create. Nevertheless, “Casa de Lava” is an extraordinary and captivating work in its own right.
