Saturday Matinee “Yellow Rose” (2019)

“Yellow Rose” (2019) is a poignant drama that tells the story of Rose Garcia (Eva Noblezada), a 17-year-old Filipina-American teenager living in Texas with her undocumented mother, Priscilla (Princess Punzalan). Rose dreams of becoming a country music singer, pouring her heart and soul into her songwriting and performances. However, her life takes a dramatic turn when her mother is detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Faced with the threat of deportation and separation from her only family, Rose embarks on a journey of self-discovery and resilience. She finds refuge with her aunt Gail (Lea Salonga) in Austin, but their relationship is strained by Gail’s disapproval of Rose’s musical aspirations and her mother’s undocumented status. As Rose navigates the challenges of being an undocumented immigrant, she must grapple with questions of identity, belonging, and the sacrifices she is willing to make for her dreams.

“Yellow Rose” beautifully weaves together themes of family, music, and the immigrant experience. The film showcases the emotional complexities of undocumented families and the constant fear of separation that shadows their lives. Rose’s passion for country music serves as a powerful symbol of her search for identity and belonging in a country that often feels hostile to her existence. With its heartfelt performances and captivating original songs, “Yellow Rose” is a moving story of hope, resilience, and the enduring power of dreams.
