Saturday Matinee: “Hidden Figures” (2016)

“Hidden Figures” is a remarkable film that tells the inspiring true story of three African-American women who played a pivotal role in NASA’s space program during the early 1960s. The movie focuses on the lives and contributions of Katherine G. Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson, who overcame the dual hurdles of racism and sexism to become instrumental in the success of astronaut John Glenn’s historic orbit around Earth.

Katherine Johnson, portrayed by Taraji P. Henson, is a mathematical prodigy whose calculations were critical for the mission’s success. Dorothy Vaughan, played by Octavia Spencer, is a brilliant mathematician and programmer who becomes an expert in the then-new field of computer programming. Janelle Monáe’s character, Mary Jackson, is an engineer who fights for her right to advance in a field dominated by men.

The film highlights the determination, intelligence, and grace of these women as they navigate the challenges of working in a segregated and male-dominated environment. Their story is not only a testament to their genius but also serves as a powerful example of the strength and resilience of women who refuse to be limited by the societal constraints of their time.

“Hidden Figures” is a celebration of the unsung heroes whose contributions were crucial to one of the most significant achievements in American history — the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit, which marked a turning point in the Space Race. It’s a tribute to the power of perseverance and the potential that lies within every individual, regardless of gender or race.
