Movie Monday: “Brave” (2012)

“Brave” is a 2012 American animated fantasy film produced by Pixar Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures. Directed by Mark Andrews and Brenda Chapman, and co-directed by Steve Purcell, the film features the voices of Kelly Macdonald, Emma Thompson, Billy Connolly, and others. It tells the story of Princess Merida of DunBroch, who defies an age-old custom and inadvertently unleashes chaos in the kingdom. When her mother, Queen Elinor, falls victim to a curse that turns her into a bear, Merida must find the true meaning of bravery to undo the curse before it becomes permanent.

Set in the Scottish Highlands, “Brave” is notable for being Pixar’s first film with a female protagonist and for its exploration of themes such as family, tradition, and self-determination. The film’s animation was widely praised, especially for its depiction of Merida’s expressive hair and the lush Scottish landscapes. “Brave” also marked the first use of the Dolby Atmos sound format in a film. The movie was a box office success and received generally positive reviews from critics.
