Reel to Read Movies: “Harriet” (2019)

“Harriet” is a 2019 biographical film that portrays the extraordinary life of Harriet Tubman, an iconic American freedom fighter. Directed by Kasi Lemmons, who co-wrote the screenplay with Gregory Allen Howard, the film stars Cynthia Erivo in the titular role, with Leslie Odom Jr., Joe Alwyn, and Janelle Monáe in supporting roles.

The movie chronicles Tubman’s harrowing escape from slavery and her transformation into a renowned abolitionist who led hundreds to freedom via the Underground Railroad. It delves into her courage, ingenuity, and tenacity, which not only liberated many slaves but also altered the course of history.

“Harriet” premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 10, 2019, and was released in the United States on November 1, 2019. The film received generally favorable reviews, particularly praising Cynthia Erivo’s powerful performance. Erivo’s portrayal earned her nominations for Best Actress at the Academy Awards, Golden Globes, and the Screen Actors Guild. Additionally, for the song “Stand Up,” Erivo and Joshuah Brian Campbell received nominations for an Oscar, Grammy, and Golden Globe.
