Selma (2014) is a historical drama film directed by Ava DuVernay and written by Paul Webb. The film stars David Oyelowo as King, Carmen Ejogo as his wife Coretta Scott King, Tom Wilkinson as President Lyndon B. Johnson, Tim Roth as Governor George Wallace, and Oprah Winfrey as Annie Lee Cooper, a local activist.

The film depicts the struggles and sacrifices of the people who fought for their right to vote in the face of violent opposition and institutional racism. It also shows the political and personal challenges that King faced, such as his conflicts with Johnson, his surveillance by the FBI, and his marital troubles. The film culminates in the historic march from Selma to Montgomery, where thousands of protesters faced brutal attacks by the police and the National Guard, but also received national and international attention and support.

It is a film that showcases the power of nonviolent resistance, the importance of collective action, and the need for social justice. It is a film that celebrates the achievements of the movement but also reminds us of the work that still needs to be done.

The film received critical acclaim and numerous awards and nominations, including four Golden Globe nominations, and two Academy Award nominations, winning one for Best Original Song for “Glory” by John Legend and Common. The film was also praised for its performances, especially Oyelowo’s portrayal of King, and its direction by DuVernay, who became the first black female director to be nominated for a Golden Globe and the first black female director to have a film nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture.
