Movie Monday “Anastasia” (1997)

Anastasia (1997) is an animated musical historical fantasy film produced and directed by Don Bluth and Gary Goldman.

It is based on the legend of the Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna of Russia, who was rumored to have survived the execution of her family by the Bolsheviks in 1918.

The film follows the eighteen-year-old orphan Anya, who suffers from amnesia and joins two con men, Dimitri and Vladimir, to find her grandmother, the Dowager Empress Marie Feodorovna, in Paris. However, they are pursued by the evil mystic Rasputin, who wants to finish his curse on the Romanov family.

The film features the voices of Meg Ryan, John Cusack, Kelsey Grammer, Christopher Lloyd, Hank Azaria, Bernadette Peters, Kirsten Dunst, and Angela Lansbury. The film was the first animated feature from 20th Century Fox Animation and received positive reviews from critics and audiences.

It was nominated for two Academy Awards for Best Original Song and Best Original Musical or Comedy Score. The film also inspired a direct-to-video spin-off and a stage musical adaptation.
