Udigrudi Fridays — Film Series: Bang Bang Screening
Udigrudi Fridays — Film Series:
A film series celebrating Brazilian Cinema Marginal—or Udigrudi—directors and their underground scene from the 1960s through 1980s. This series amplifies the discussion of film as a form of political activism related to the margins of Brazilian society. Heavily censored during the military dictatorship (1964–1985), many Udigrudi film directors struggled to find funding for their projects, leading to experimental narratives and raw visual aesthetics. Intentionally untamed, these filmmakers responded with pure emotive power to the paternalistic intellectualism of the contemporary Cinema Novo movement in Brazil.
Bang Bang, 1971
Written and directed by Italian-Brazilian director Andrea Tonacci, Bang Bang (1971) is a surrealist western “anti-movie” emblematic of the Cinema Marginal movement in Brazil. The story follows an outlaw and his gang in a nonlinear narrative. The comic film deconstructs clichés in a never-ending cycle of action, oneiric dialogues, and avant-garde cinematography.
