Lehman College’s annual Hispanic Heritage Month celebration kicks off with a screening of the highly anticipated film Papi (2020), followed by a discussion with the filmmakers and the author of the book. The film, 88 minutes long, is in Spanish with English subtitles.

Papi, directed by Noelia Quintero Herencia, is the film adaptation of the novel of the same title by Rita Indiana.

Rita Indiana is a Dominican writer, performer, and cultural icon considered by the Spanish newspaper El País to be one of the 100 most influential Latino personalities. She has been highly recognized and awarded on the Caribbean literary scene, and her viral music success has made Indiana a household name in the Dominican Republic where she is popularly referred to as “La Monstra” (the monster).

Noelia Quintero Herencia is a filmmaker, researcher, and screenwriter. She has worked as a television producer and director in Mexico, New York, Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico, where she created more than 52 documentaries for the TV series Prohibido Olvidar featuring Puerto Rican cultural icons. She has been developing and directing music videos and content for Dominican writer and composer, Rita Indiana. She has received two Emmy Suncoast awards for Prohibido Olvidar and Ellas, mujeres en la música (2021). Her latest documentary Tito Matos: Ahora Sí is nominated this year for the NY Emmy. Papi is her first feature film.

This event is organized by the Department of Latin American and Latino Studies in collaboration with the Office of the Dean of Arts & Humanities, with cosponsorship from the Mexican Studies Institute, the Leonard Lief Library, the Office of Dominican Culture Abroad, and the Departments of English, Journalism, and Languages and Literatures, the Women’s and Gender Studies Program, as well as the President’s Office and the Provost’s Office.
