The U.S. and the Holocaust: Screening & Panel Discussion
BP Levine and Florentine Films are cohosting a conversation about the docuseries “The U.S. and the Holocaust” with directors Lynn Novick and Sarah Botstein. The acclaimed miniseries explores the U.S. before, during, and after the Holocaust. Our conversation will be taking a deeper look into New York’s role and how a city billed as a gateway for immigrants in fact perpetuated the antisemitism and public indifference that had tragic human consequences across the Atlantic. Though about events that took place almost a century ago, this film sparks a critical conversation about the modern rise of antisemitism and other forms of hate sweeping the city and the nation today.
We will end the evening with a small reception with food and light refreshments.

Lynn Novick, co-director and producer of The U.S. and the Holocaust, has been making landmark documentary films about American life and culture for more than 30 years. She has created nearly 100 hours of acclaimed programming for PBS in collaboration with Ken Burns, including Ernest Hemingway, The Vietnam War, Baseball, Jazz, Frank Lloyd Wright, The War, and Prohibition — these landmark series have garnered 19 Emmy nominations. One of the most respected documentary filmmakers and storytellers in America, Novick herself has received Emmy, Peabody, and Alfred I. duPont Columbia Awards.
Sarah Botstein has for more then two decades produced some of the most popular and acclaimed documentaries on PBS. The U.S. and the Holocaust is Botstein’s directorial debut. Her work with directors Ken Burns and Lynn Novick, includes Hemingway (2020), College Behind Bars (2010), The Vietnam War (2017), Prohibition (2011), The War (2007), and Jazz (2001). She is currently producing an epic six-part series on the American Revolution and a project on Lyndon Johnson’s life and presidency. In addition to the television broadcasts, Botstein works on digital and education initiatives, in collaboration with PBS Learning Media and WETA-TV and he helps to oversee content for Ken Burns UNUM.
