“Sextortion: A Hidden Pandemic” Documentary Screening

We are excited to announce a second training in this year’s Wynona’s House Trainings and Workshops on Child Maltreatment series happening in person only on November 14, 2022, at Montclair State University Conference Center. The training will feature an exclusive screening, first in the tri-state area, of a newly released documentary “Sextortion: A Hidden Pandemic”. The film, from director, editor & producer Maria Peek, and producer & cinematographer Stephen Peek, is an investigation into the world of online grooming and sextortion — a present-day reality for one in seven children online. By unsealing the federal case of a top-gun pilot with hundreds of victims, and interviewing survivors and their parents, this true-crime piece exposes an often-overlooked crime against children, the tactics of online predators, and the voices of parents and law enforcement poised to stop online child exploitation in its tracks.

The film merges true crime with an empowering educational opportunity that provides families with essential ways to keep their children safe on the Internet. As parents themselves, the filmmakers experienced Sextortion in real time through one of their children’s classmates, and it inspired them to be the change they wanted to see in the world. With a rapidly moving running time of 85 minutes, you will be engaged and motivated to help save kids around the globe once you watch this documentary. Check out the film’s trailer here.

The training will also include a testimonial of Ms. Gina Cavallo — Advocate, Author, Trainer, Motivational Speaker, Consultant & Survivor of Sex Trafficking. Ms. Cavallo will share her life experiences to help people understand the actual reality of human trafficking and create hope for triumphing over horrific crimes against the mind, body, and spirit. Educating others about the part they can play in survivors’ freedom, healing, and restoration from shame helps prevent the victimization of others.

We will close the event with Panel Discussion with film directors and producers, Maria and Stephen Peek, representatives from the local Internet Crimes Against Children unit, and mental health professionals to further discuss and help educate our community on the ways to keep our children safe on the Internet.

This training will focus on enhancing Children Advocacy Center and Multidisciplinary (MDT) competencies to improve collaborative response and provision of an array of services, including medical and mental health, to children victimized in virtual environments as well as current and evolving laws, strategies, and practices to help protect children online and keep them safe.

Parking will be provided.

Doors open at 8:30 am.
