Please join us for an opening celebration of Entre Semilla y Fibra: Threads of Memory, Seeds of Land—Mazorca Colectiva’s IPS opening event.

Based in East Elmhurst, Queens, Mazorca Colectiva fosters community among immigrants and Indigenous peoples through ancestral practices that center on motherhood, caretaking, land cultivation, and weaving. The collective draws its cultural practices from Muisca, Lakota, Diné, Nahua, Mexica, Arhuaco, and Andean cosmovisions. This exhibition shares the collective’s recent work through photography, video, weaving, and text.

2 pm: Welcome by Mazorca Colectiva, followed by an artist-led tour

Language Access: This is a cross-language event, with English—Spanish simultaneous interpretation available.

3 pm: Performance by Maraca Bruja

Maraca Bruja brings traditional gaita music from Colombia to NYC. They interpret the musical traditions that have been passed down through generations in the Montes de Maria region of Colombia and have spread across the world. A legacy of the region’s African and Indigenous ancestry, these traditional sounds and rhythms pay tribute to the resistance of spirit in the face of forced mestizaje.

4 pm: Reception with food and drinks catered by Evelia’s Tamales

Entre Semilla y Fibra: Threads of Memory, Seeds of Land is presented as part of the Indigenous Practice Studio (IPS) Commissioning Program. The program is organized in partnership with Tecumseh Ceaser, artist and cultural consultant, and Eva Mayhabal Davis, cultural advocate and curator, together with Queens Museum staff members.
