The Nippon Club Special Exhibition “Kintsugi and Urushi”

Rather than hiding damage, it is transformed into beauty. Rather than ending in breakage, new value is born. The traditional Japanese crafts of kintsugi (golden joinery) and urushi (lacquerware) embody this philosophy of restoration.

This exhibition explores the theme of Kintsugi and Urushi, presenting Japanese approaches to repair and tradition from both historical and contemporary perspectives.

On view are lacquerware works by Wajimaya Zenni, a historic workshop founded in 1813, and contemporary pieces by Yamakyu Japanware, a family-run lacquerware studio in Sabae City, Fukui Prefecture. These works showcase the craftsmanship nurtured in two of Japan’s most celebrated lacquerware regions: Wajima and Echizen.

In January 2024, the Noto Peninsula Earthquake caused severe damage to many workshops and artisans in Wajima. In response, the Echizen Lacquerware Cooperative, based in Sabae, extended support to Wajima artisans by offering workspace, tools, and financial aid. This exhibition introduces lacquerware from both regions, with an awareness of this connection and the spirit of mutual support shared among craftspeople.

Also featured are works by contemporary artist Taku Nakano, who revitalizes broken vessels using his distinctive mosaic kintsugi technique, melding restoration with artistic innovation.

In addition, the exhibition includes related works by Kayo Kitakomi, a calligrapher who explores themes of memory and time through poetry and ink, and Hachiro Watanabe, known as a “sleep-in-your-car” photographer, whose backlit imagery captures hidden moments in familiar landscapes. Through ink and light, these artists offer unique perspectives on transformation and impermanence, expanding the expressive depth of the exhibition.

We invite you to experience this multifaceted presentation where tradition and creativity come together in meaningful dialogue.
