ISSA SOW Painting Exhibition
Issa Sow was born in Dakar, Senegal, in 1975. He is a contemporary Senegalese autodidact painter and gallerist. In 1999, he moved to Montpellier, France, where he lived for several years. Later, he relocated to New Jersey, the United States, with his wife and children.
In 2012, Sow opened the Issyra Art Gallery in Hoboken, New Jersey. The gallery showcases local and international artists. It features traditional and contemporary African artworks, including Sow’s own extensive collection. Additionally, the gallery offers music, dance, and painting workshops. These workshops support Sow’s mission to promote African culture and his childhood memories of teranga.
Sow’s paintings do not adhere to a specific art movement. His work explores the interaction of elements in the conscious and unconscious mind. Through his art, he reveals fears and conflicts influenced by African oral history and contemporary societal issues. His paintings capture the duality inherent in all aspects of life. Sow combines recycled materials and organic colors like coffee, hibiscus, and fruits with traditional paints. He frequently uses symbols of humans, animals, and divinity. These symbols not only convey history but also protect and fulfill viewers’ wishes and desires. His work mirrors the practices of traditional African masks, where his paintings serve as a medium for dialogue between spirits and people.
Sow’s artistic journey began at an early age. At nine, he left school to be home-schooled by his father. Unable to write, he developed his craft through drawing and creating toys from discarded items. It wasn’t until later, after marriage and parenthood, that he recognized his talent. Women have played a significant role in Sow’s acceptance of his gift. This influence is evident in the feminine beauty that permeates his paintings. His mother, who continues the oral transmission of African history and values, and his wife, who offers unconditional love, have inspired many of his works. These artworks often explore the strength of women and their innate ability to give birth. They also highlight the power they grant to men with unwavering humility.
