Artist Remarks & Performance Piece: 6:00 pm

Third Space is delighted to highlight Brooklyn artist Kaixi Yang (b. New Zealand, 1998) for her solo retrospective ‘MORE LIFE: Making Sense on Earth Today’, showcasing 9 years of work across the mediums of climate, healthcare, gesture, and technology.

The show, opening Saturday 27th of July between 4:00 — 8:00 pm, features abstract calligraphy works, sculptural installations, augmented reality video installations, and ecosystem studies. At 6:00 pm, Kaixi will be performing a live painting with live sensor-based projection art by collaborator Aldo.

Kaixi’s artistic practice is one borne from her lived experience negotiating life force, informed by dual familial influences of Eastern philosophy and Western medical sciences to move energy and heal. Through the contexts of retail, product design studies at Stanford, and in her climate-centric design studio, ENTITY, Kaixi has been able to expand her mastery of mediums to hypothesize and realize tools to regulate and channel living energy in line with the urgent public health crisis posed by present climate collapse.

The exhibition explores dysmorphic conceptions of the body and the self via the history of science & surgery via body horror and presents a thesis on the misogynist creation of female mental illness. The show then delves into representations of and interventions in ecosystems, as a means of displaying reverence and fear for nature in the face of waste colonialism.

The show progresses into Kaixi’s transmutations via a series of calligraphic abstractions that channel her familial legacy of Chinese calligraphers, and that are direct attempts at sense-making, questioning free will, and engaging post-hoc rationalization as a necessary and potent tool in living life.

The show also features video works showcasing prototypes of brain-computer augmented reality apps, biomimicking kinetic sculpture, and procedural animation.

Beer, wine, and vegan pho will be served.

RSVP is encouraged.
