Exhibition “‘Does Art Cure?’”
The exhibition “Does Art Cure?”, by Katia Canton, inspires and broadens discussions and exchanges between researchers, therapists, educators, curators, and artists in the wake of the diseases aggravated by the pandemic.
Katia Canton, a professor of Aesthetics and Art History at the PGEHA USP Inter-Unit department, holds a Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Arts from New York University. She is one of the great specialists in Brazil and abroad in the relationship between art, narrative, and fairy tales and their intersections with psychoanalysis and education.
With more than 30 years of research informing her work, she has dedicated herself to an extensive artistic production, as presented in this exhibition. In her drawings and paintings, produced with acrylic, oil paints, Indian ink, and watercolors, she uses liquid dyes extracted from teas, plants, and medicines such as iodine, ricin, gentian violet, and methylene aul.
Applied to the works, the medicine tinctures allude to a desire for healing and transformation, a symbolic action that led her to deepen her research and train in psychoanalysis. A tincture is a form of preparation in which the active principles of medicinal plants are extracted, using mainly alcohol. In pharmacology, a tincture is an alcoholic extract, a"spirit", or a solution made with a non-volatile mineral, such as iodine.
Katia Canton
Katia Canton is a Visual Artist, Writer, Psychoanalyst, Professor, and Advisor at the Interunit Graduate Program in Aesthetics and Art History at the University of São Paulo. As Associate Professor III, she was the Curator and Deputy Director of the Museum of Contemporary Art of the University of São Paulo. She is a Visiting Professor and Researcher at CLEPUL at the Faculty of Letters of the University of Lisbon. She holds a degree in Social Communication/Journalism from the School of Communications and Arts of the University of São Paulo (1986), a diploma in literature et civilization française from the Université de Nancy II (1986), a master’s degree in Performance Studies from the Tisch School of the Arts, New York University (1989) and a Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Arts from the School of Visual Arts and Education, New York University (1993), with research on “Fairy Tales and the Arts”. She is a post-doc in Art Theory and Criticism at ECA USP, with a thesis based on her research and curatorship, “Self-portrait, Mirror of Artist”, examining the powers of art in education. She was vice-director of MAC USP (August 2014 to August 2018) and director between 2015 and 2016. She was head of the Temporary Exhibitions Division, the Curatorship Division, and the Art and Education Division of the USP Museum of Contemporary Art. She is also an author of more than 60 books, some with international editions, and winner of several literary prizes, among them three Jabuti prizes, granted by CBL (Câmara Brasileira do Livro). She has extensive experience in the arts field, creating and presenting national and international exhibitions, working mainly on the following themes: contemporary art, education, interdisciplinarity, children’s and youth literature, poetry, performance, psychoanalysis, and fairy tales.
