Exhibition “Transitions and Transformations”

In their works of art, the artist strives to express and evoke the diverse emotions of day-to-day life in the current time and atmosphere through innovative use and presentation of media and subject treatment. The exploration of the Black and female experience is evident throughout their work, reflecting the amalgamation of learned contemporary art styles with the artist’s lived experiences. The initiation of the early series, “Woman’s Struggles,” stemmed from the fascination with the image of a delicate female form pulling against a resistant force or object. This duality, where evident strength is uncharacteristically coupled with an idealized feminine form, served as inspiration for a body of work that encapsulates the same duality inherent in the perception of the “superwoman.” In acknowledgment of a patriarchal society, the resistant force is portrayed as male. Other shapes and symbols associated with the female persona, such as depictions of the African fertility symbol (the akuaba), the female biological symbol, and the fetus, are embedded in some of the works.

These multiple images of the female pulling or tugging in various positions transitioned into the series, “Lace Doilies and Paper Dolls,” which inherently carries feminine imagery. The artist explored this theme by painting on various surfaces or incising on acetate and plexiglass to create detailed, intricate textures, designs, and patterns, evoking the tactile sense of lace. This transition then evolved into the artistic transformation of works featuring women at the forefront of global concerns, challenging the docile role dictated by societal norms and transcending ethnic, cultural, and economic barriers. By addressing issues artistically in an aesthetically pleasing yet socially significant manner, the artist’s work transformed. Images and patterns unite symbolically and compositionally in a portrayal that exudes a duality of strength and delicacy, simplicity and complexity, intellectual order, and emotional impact.

As one series evolves into another, it becomes a perpetual process that defies complete metamorphosis, providing the artist with the transitions to explore and extend the reality of their existence. Through transforming pathways of seeing, enjoying, and celebrating the most infinite, minuscule aspects of what is, the artist’s work becomes a vehicle to recapture the elusive concept of what was, culminating in a beacon that allows them to savor the tantalizing knowledge of what can be.
