Artist Statement

Desire is individual, the body wants what it wants. I desire water, beaches, bathtubs, and bedrooms. I desire dance floors, full moons, and sunrises. My paintings explore desire. They try to understand queer hedonism in the positive as both a personal journey and a historical one. The Queer BIPOC identity is the understanding of self that is not heteronormative, but not opposed to heterosexuality. It’s an identity that exists inequality.

Historical queerness is about the people who paved the way for me. Foremost about the BIPOC queer communities that took risks that white queers never had to contemplate. When people of color step out of their communities it’s dangerous. Stonewall reverberates, it changes everything and HIV/AIDS transforms our community again. Destruction and rebirth make my existence possible. Like the Musician Sylvester, the activist/sex worker Marsha P. Johnson, and the many queer makers of all ethnicities I’m galvanized by our different narratives. My work is committed to telling both a story of great love and oppression. My paintings exist between dualities. They are a testament to what came before: the sacrifice my queer-colored ancestors endured and our survival.

BIO

Daniel is a self-taught Black — Jewish Queer artist working and living in both Brooklyn, New York, and the Hudson Valley area. He studied writing and literature at the New School for Social Research, Eugene Lang. He considers himself lucky to have been surrounded by many talented friends who were artists early in life. Being able to live in New York City and enjoy its diversity has been a great inspiration. His works are in many collections in America, Britain, Europe, and now Asia. He makes drawings & paintings of people he admires either from history or from social media. He is engaged in the images of people for either their contributions to social justice or for his attraction to them. Creating a drawing helps him to create a closeness with his subjects, and lessens the emotional isolation that happens in the digital age, especially during COVID.

Daniel’s process begins by researching a subject through images and imagining them as part of his visual world. Once he has decided on the subject, he draws and then energizes the image with color. He uses mixed media on paper to flesh out and bring to life the photograph he is working from. He is not interested in reproducing the image but in discovering something about the humanity that hides in plain sight from him. The search for this humanity is developed by the marks he makes and allows him to be intimate with the subject.
