Celebrate the opening of Montclair State University Galleries Fall 2023 exhibitions The Backend, Case Studies: Joseph Parra — the edge of Flesh and Blood, and Sound Booth — Brian Oakes

Remarks by Director Megan C. Austin and Curator Jesse Bandler Firestone at 6 p.m

The Backend is a group exhibition of works by 13 contemporary artists who delve into the protocols and agreements that shape our society and the framework of our participation. Featuring works by Merlin Carpenter, Maia Chao and Josephine Devanbu, Johann Diedrick, Sophia Giovannitti, Liz Magic Laser, Ari Melenciano, William Powhida, Bat-Ami Rivlin, Rose Salane, Finnegan Shannon, TJ Shin, and Julia Weist. On view in the George Segal Gallery.

Sound Booth is a new series of sound installations outside the entrance to the Segal Gallery. Brian Oakes will be the first artist in this series, bringing together sculpture, sound, and lighting to create an immersive environment for deep listening.

Case Studies 3: Joseph Parra — The Edge of Flesh and Blood is the newest addition to the solo exhibition series in the Alexander Kasser Theater cases. Parra’s paintings explore the larger consequences of searching for validation, inspiration, and intimacy through digital images asking “How does desire change when life is mediated through screens?”
