Exhibition “Overexposed: Art, Technology, and the Body”
With Sonia Epstein, Elisabeth Sherman & Toby Lee.
The coincidence of the development of cinema and X-ray technology in 1895 gave both fields visual access to the interior of the body, leading to questions of how women’s bodies in particular would be represented in art, medicine, and popular culture, and how these images would be instrumentalized for public policy. In anticipation of the opening of an exhibition addressing these questions, “Overexposed: Art, Technology, and the Body” at the Museum of the Moving Image, this panel brings the exhibition’s curator and an editor of its catalogue in conversation with scholars to consider how medical imaging technologies visualize women’s bodies and the broader implications of these images.
