Webinar “Reading Science: A Tour of Free Resources, Online Communities, Experts, and More”

For reading and literacy instruction, there’s always something new and something more to explore. In this edWebinar, we’ll look at the growing wealth of professional learning, collaborative communities, and websites available to help educators learn more about the Science of Reading, access helpful free resources and find communities to support and share experiences and expertise.

From games and decodable texts to podcasts and professional learning sources, you’ll have a new collection of places to turn to when you’re looking for insights, answers, and next steps with your students and your own professional growth. We’ll also share information about experts to connect with and follow. And yes, there’s more! The presenters will model clever ways to use these materials and share helpful “look-for” as you make choices about communities and resources you and your colleagues will want to explore further and join.

This edWebinar will be of interest to PreK-12 teachers, librarians, school and district leaders, education technology leaders, and curriculum leaders. There will be time for questions at the end of the presentation.

About the Presenters

Stacy Hurst has degrees in sociology and elementary education and reading and has Advanced Reading and ESL Endorsements. In over 20 years as an educator, she has been a first-grade teacher, ELL teacher, literacy coach, reading specialist, and now a university professor. Her extensive experience includes teaching reading, coordinating interventions for struggling readers, coaching teachers, implementing blended learning, and training thousands of teachers on effective literacy instruction. Stacy is the chief academic officer at Reading Horizons, an assistant professor of teacher education at Southern Utah University, and the co-author of Reading Horizons Discovery®.

Teaching and learning are Jillian Kaster’s life focus. Before joining Reading Horizons, Jillian spent 10 years as a classroom teacher in Chicago and Minneapolis. She was an active member of her school’s instructional leadership team and served on the district-level Transformational Teacher Leadership Program (TTLP). Through TTLP, Jillian and her cohort collaborated with the Office of Black Male Student Achievement to create and facilitate all-staff workshops on race and cultural awareness to increase the capacity to educate their diverse learners. Jillian used her research in building inclusive classroom libraries and her training in explicit and systematic phonics to provide exemplary reading instruction to her students. Jillian joined the Reading Horizons team in 2017 and wears all kinds of hats with the organization. She has trained hundreds of educators on Reading Horizons with a 98% high approval rating from participants. Supporting students and educators through building strong relationships is her true passion.

Yvette Manns, M.Ed. is based in the Atlanta Metropolitan area and brings 13 years of early childhood literacy experience. She has served as an elementary school teacher, instructional coach, and literacy facilitator in public, charter, and private schools across the city of Atlanta. Her latest work was as a content developer and instructional designer at a literacy research center, where she developed training courses for the district, school, and government leaders in all areas of early literacy. She also served as the team lead for the kindergarten through third-grade facilitators, as well as the on-screen facilitator for teacher training courses. Her biggest strength is the ability to connect with others, and not only initiate, but foster relationships with partners. Through collaboration and identifying educators’ strengths and motivations, Yvette has been able to reform literacy instruction at the classroom, school, and district levels.
