The 1.8 square mile Borough of Highland Park, New Jersey has no cemeteries within its boundaries. Therefore, many of the borough’s former citizens are buried in the neighboring towns’ graveyards. New Brunswick’s Elmwood Cemetery actually began as the Cedar lawn Cemetery. Established in 1868 by several of New Brunswick’s prominent citizens, it once encompassed 100 acres. In 1873, a different group named the Elmwood Cemetery Association took over operations and their board of trustees has run it since that time. Open to all religious groups and benevolent associations, it is truly a multi-cultural burial ground.

This 1-hour walking tour is hosted by the Highland Park Historical Commission and will be led jointly by guides from the Commission and the Elmwood Cemetery Association. The tour route will highlight notable residents and families of Highland Park such as Robert Wood Johnson, the Meyers-Rice family, Chrissie Bartle, the Janeways, the Carpenders, and many more. The tour will also discuss the history of the cemetery itself.

The event is planned to be rain or shine unless there is extreme weather. Please come prepared and wear comfortable walking shoes.

Meeting location and parking details will be provided upon registration.
