Jacob M. Appel is the author of many books of fiction and nonfiction, including Who Says You’re Dead?, The Biology of Luck, and The Man Who Wouldn’t Stand Up, in addition to being a professor of psychiatry and medical education at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, and a licensed NYC tour guide.
A child of suburban Chicago, Jonathan Liebson grew up hearing tales about the fabled New York City of his father’s day — from the World’s Fair and Mayor La Guardia to his grandfather’s drugstore in Midtown — before he eventually takes his stab at living in the Big Apple. Hello (And Goodbye) To All That explores a changing New York from the days of Tower Records and The Village Voice through the era of cell phones and bike lanes. The book combines funny and moving stories from daily life with an up-close view of larger historical events: witnessing 9/11 from his roof deck; hearing Barack Obama in Washington Square Park; living in a darkened swath of Manhattan after Hurricane Sandy; teaching uprooted students from the epicenter of the pandemic; and much more.
“Jonathan Liebson’s book reflects a profound wisdom about people ... and the cities and world we live in.”
